About Papier Mache
Kashmiri Paper Mache is a handicraft of Kashmir that was brought from Persia in the 15th century. It is based primarily on paper pulp, and is a richly decorated, colourful artefact generally in the form of vases, bowls, or cups (with and without metal rims), boxes, trays, bases of lamps, and many other small objects. The objects made by moulding paper pulp in various shapes, then decorating them with designs in various colours. In the figurative sense, the word ‘papier-mache’ has come to be identified as the Art of Kashmir.
Handling Instructions
Papier Mache :
- Keep in dry conditions away from sunlight.
- Ideally, Papier Mache should only be dusted and care taken to not rub-off the paint.
- Never use water to clean your product. This can cause the white cloudy areas that we sometime see on vintage product.
- If your product gets dirty, clean it with cotton wool dipped in soapy water.
- When dried, polish your product with micro crystalline wax. This will protect it and give it a lustrous finish.
- After each use, wipe it with a dry cloth.
- Don’t’ ever rinse or immerse your papier mache antiques in water.
Embrodiery :
- Handwash with cold water with proper care of its handle.
- Delicate machine cold water wash with extra care of its handle.
- All embroidered bags should be washed with a mild detergent.
- If bleach is required for washing, a small amount of chlorine bleach can be used.
